Aug 2019 | A Good Day to Dice at 25c, Petaling Jaya
On 31 August (Merdeka Day) 2019, we ran #ttrpg demo games at 25C Art & Hobbies – it was A Good Day To Dice, our local monthly mini-convention! I’d heard so much about these gatherings but this was my first time joining as a volunteer GM. So glad I did. My players (2 newcomers to roleplaying, 1 relatively new roleplayer, and 1 veteran) had great fun questioning the denizens of a magical marsh to find lost Elf poetry in my Pipedream game.
Also we had Ben Chong running his own Heart and Lightning playtest for a full table of teen godlings! Ho Yi Jian (organiser of TTGDMY – Tabletop Game Designers of Malaysia) running The Quiet Year, which was a big hit! And veteran GM Douglas Larke doing his best Peter Capaldi impression as he ran Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space! A great line-up of RPGs covering subjects such as teen rebellion, post-apocalyptic community-building, scary time-travel adventures and comedy-horror mysteries.
A Good Day to Dice owed a lot to the efforts of Lee Ken Wen, who organised the meetups through Reddit, Whatsapp and various social media. He always does the hard work and makes it happen. He was ill and couldn’t make it but his touch was still felt at the event – he kept us updated regularly in the weeks leading up to A Good Day to Dice and hooked up each GM with players in Whatsapp groups ahead of time.

The haze-shrouded, post-apocalyptic city of “Kuala Lumpuh” was the setting that the players of The Quiet Year created, facilitated by Ho Yi Jian.
